Carmen Whitelock is Head of Online Strategy at Arup, the global design engineering firm. Based in London, she has been driving Arup’s online communications strategy since 2008, having joined from Save the Children UK where she held a similar role. Since taking over at Arup, Carmen has been responsible for the full redesign of the global website (arup.com), as well as introducing a new governance framework and editorial policies. Last year, Carmen boosted progress further with the launch of ‘Thoughts’ (thoughts.arup.com), a thought leadership blog for experts, practitioners and enthusiasts to discuss a host of issues affecting the built environment. Originally from New Zealand, Carmen has amassed extensive international experience in online PR, marketing and communications.

James Kent has more than 25 years of experience in marketing and communications for scientific and technical organizations in the U.S. and Europe. He is responsible for internal and external communications, media relations, Web and online communications, and firm-wide marketing functions. Jim was previously head of communications at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, director of communications at Thomson-Reuters, and held various communications and marketing roles in a 15-year career with Schlumberger, the oilfield services company.
Jim started his career in newspapers, working for dailies and weeklies in the U.S. Northeast. His reporting and writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, American Scientist and Scientific American. He is coauthor of “A Moveable Shore: The Fate of the Connecticut Coast,” (Duke University Press, 1992) a layman’s guide to coastline evolution related to climate change.

Mr. Wheeler is President of Ayers Saint Gross and has more than 25 years of experience in all aspects of the architectural profession. He is responsible for the development of Ayers Saint Gross’ nationally recognized Comparing Campuses Poster, a statistical database of more than 170 college and university campuses. He has written and lectured extensively on trends in higher education planning and co-authored the chapter on campus planning for the APPA/NACUBO publication Planning and Managing the Campus Facilities Portfolio. In 2009 he presented a paper to the Confederation of India Industry’s National Committee on Education, which outlined the physical facility requirements for the proposed development of 1,500 new universities in India. In 2010, Mr. Wheeler received an International Leadership Award from the World Trade Center Institute.

Nicholas Holt is a Technical Director at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, New York. A firm believer in the benefits of collaborative and empirically based practice models, Mr. Holt approaches design by integrating building systems, sustainable design principles and extensive construction knowledge from the conceptual development of a project through construction documentation and execution. Mr. Holt is a leader in SOM’s High Performance Design Initiative, developing tools by which SOM will meet the net zero carbon, energy, waste, and water goals of the coming years. Mr. Holt is also a Principal at the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE), a research collaboration between SOM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Focusing on emergent materials and technologies, CASE blends private sector practicality and academic rigor to develop innovative, award winning technologies for application in buildings. Within SOM, Mr. Holt is a leader in SOM’s firm wide High Performance Design Initiative, an internal think tank that is developing the standards and goals by which SOM will approach the design of High Performance buildings and ultimately meet the net zero carbon, energy, waste, water goals of the coming years.
